Sportive Kinross
I'm delighted to be supporting the cyclists of the Sportive this year with a Sports Massage Team! We will be based inside the Campus offering short 10 minute sessions to help soothe those aching legs after the event.
The far-reaching benefits of post-race Sports Massage include:
- Reducing muscle pain & tension
- Relieving delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)
- Restoring and increasing range of motion
- Restoring fitness by speeding recovery
- Helping to heal minor soft tissue injuries & prevent major ones
- Releasing endorphins, the body's feel good hormones
Post-event massage is fantastically warming! Warm skin increases circulation which provides fresh nutrients and oxygen-rich blood. Blood heals, fuels and flushes toxins from your cells. This warming process soothes and relieves tension in your sore muscles. In addition, by lengthening your sore muscles, massage restores and improves your flexibility and range of motion.
Massage also reduces the likelihood that you will be sore the next day. It has been shown that it helps athletes recuperate from fatigue more effectively than rest alone. Massage strokes also release endorphins that reduce pain, produce pleasure and create a sense of well-being.
World class athletes often credit massage with keeping them healthy & preventing injury. Why not give it a try? We look forward to seeing you there! Payment is made directly to the therapist in cash so remember to bring your £5 on the day!
To give me an idea of how many riders we can expect, please leave your name (and expected return time) when you register on the morning of the event.
GOOD LUCK!!

Diploma in Remedial & Sports Massage
I passed my Diploma in Remedial & Sports Massage with the Advanced Massage Techniques School in Edinburgh in October 2011 and am looking forward to offering these fantastic forms of bodywork & assessment to clients in my clinics.
“Remedial” massage therapy simply means using manual therapy techniques to try to “remedy” a problem. But to offer a remedy you must do more than just relieve pain; you must also be able to understand how the problem came about and how it can be avoided in the future. To achieve this, my training covered a range of massage and advanced soft tissue techniques set within a framework of assessment and rehabilitation procedures. As well as dealing effectively with a variety of musculoskeletal problems this can also be used to help in recovery and reduce the symptoms in many medical conditions too. Sports massage is a specialist area within Remedial massage therapy which applies all the same techniques and principles in a way that best meet the specific needs of the athlete.

Clinic Changes
My Dunfermline clinic, Healthcare Now, is changing hands at the end of March so I will be moving on to pastures new this Spring. Whilst I am sad to be leaving, I am delighted to be joining The Althos Clinic in Perth from May onwards. The Althos Clinic is one of Perth's most established holistic health centres with a team of highly qualified practitioners offering therapies including osteopathy, acupuncture, homeopathy & massage. Located just off the Glasgow Road, the centre is close to the bus & train stations and just a short walk from the town centre with it's lovely parks, boutiques & cafes. I hope to be able to accomodate most of my Dunfermline clients either at my home treatment room or at The Althos Clinic.

New Logo & Website Look
I have spent some fruitful time over the past while with a local graphic designer developing a new look for my website & logo and have thoroughly enjoyed the creative process.
The picture of the beautiful blossom was chosen to symbolise freshness, nature, joy, life, new beginnings...
My logo is based on my initials and also symbolises the baby in the womb. The lines are uneven to give a nice organic feel and reflect the holistic nature of my work. The colours chosen are calm, fresh & natural. There is an earthiness to the shapes that I love - almost like rocks or stones.
Looking deeper the logo is designed to show that massage therapy is a partnership between client & therapist in the cocoon of the therapy room. The shapes symbolise a clients body & mind surrounded by the positive healing energy of massage therapy.

Pregnancy massage reduces prematurity, low birthweight and postnatal depression
A recent study by the Touch Research Institute in Miami has shown remarkable benefits of partner massage for pregnant mums experiencing ante-natal depression. In the study, pregnant women diagnosed with major depression were given 12 weeks of massage therapy two times per week by their partner or only standard treatment as a control group. The massage therapy group women versus the control group women not only had reduced depression by the end of the therapy period, but they also had reduced depression and stress hormone levels during the postnatal period. Their newborns were also less likely to be born prematurely and low birthweight, and they had lower stress levels and performed better on the developmental scales.
Ante-natal depression is a little known condition however it is estimated that around 10% of mums-to-be suffer which is no less than those suffering postnatally. If you feel that you may be in need of support due to depression check out this article from Netmums which provides sources of information and positive strategies to help yourself.

Steps For Stress
"A Simple Guide to Stressing Less & Enjoying More"
The Scottish Government has recently launched a new website due to increasing concerns regarding stress and it's effects on the health & wellbeing of the population. The website helps users identify if they are suffering from stress and provides simple steps to reduce it such as eating well, sleeping well, being active and taking time out to relax. It provides solutions to working with difficult problems such as relationship, money or health worries giving users the confidence to cope better. Simple relaxation exercises are provided as well as a Stress Diary and there is the chance to join an online community to share tips & relaxation ideas. In my view the website is a great addition to the self-help tools currently available and anything that helps to reduce the stigma of stress is very welcome. If you are feeling the affects of stress & anxiety it is worth checking it out. Small steps can make a big difference to your life.
